Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Beet, Strawberry, Orange, Apple & Kale Smoothie


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

It's shoulder season between late spring harvest and early summer, and that means a whole bunch of variety at the farmers market. I picked a beet smoothie (don't forget the gloves) with some summer fruit (you can get at the grocery store if it's not available near you yet, or frozen from last summer!). 

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

All the fruit and veg in this smoothie is great, but if you want an extra kick, throw some chia seeds or hemp seeds in, or some protein powder in there too. The blender will break it right up and combine easily.

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Spinach Hummus for St. Patrick's Day!


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

We're at the beginning of the Barre Body Fitness Challenge, and each month I'm going to bring you a recipe for breakfast, snack time, lunch, and dinner! This week I also decided to go green for St. Patrick's day on Friday! Hummus is delicious, packed with protein and super easy to make. Throw some spinach in there for all of it's vitamins and you've got an excellent post-workout snack!

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

Bake your own tortillas so you can control the salt ratio (I used spinach ones to keep it consistent), and you don't have to limit your veggies to just green. Get some rainbow carrots from the farmers market this weekend and brighten it up!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Buckwheat Pancakes!


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

I grew up with "Pancake Tuesday" in school (and yes it's also Mardi Gras today, but I felt I should go for a breakfast food!) but they are not something I make often now. My dad always called them "sinkers", for the feeling you'd get after you eat them...but not these pancakes!
First off, they're gluten-free by using buckwheat flour, and I eliminated the sugar because you can get that kick back in with the fruit and maple syrup. You could also make them vegan (they're dairy free) by substituting the egg (with a flax egg and maybe some mashed banana). These are quick, healthier than their regular counterparts, and tasty!

Depending how dense you'd like to go with these pancakes, you can add some ground flax or chia seeds on them. And of course, have a heaping bowl of fruit on the side for balance and vitamin C!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Farro Salad with Dried Cranberries, Golden Raisins & Pistachios


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

Winter salads are some of my favourites, you get a kick of fruit (be it dried), and nuts for crunch, and the base possibilities are endless. I had some farro grains kicking around and went looking for a recipe to work with.

I combined a few ideas and tweaked the ingredients a bit (and debated making it a breakfast bowl), and landed with this mixture. Feel free to substitute the nuts for whatever you have on hand (walnut might be a good alternative), and regular raisins for golden, or apricots for the cranberries. This is an easy one to work with what's in the cupboards.

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

There's not much more you can do to this salad to make it even healthier, but you can always pack it with even more good stuff. Allergies? Go nut free. Gluten free? Try quinoa instead of farro. You could even wilt some spinach and stick it in there or throw in a handful of chickpeas!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Parsnip & Carrot Chicken Noodle Soup


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

If it's not the snow & ice that made you want to burrow into a blanket fort with a cup of soup, the return of the rain just might. Parsnips are in season now and easy to find, so I threw them together in a soup with some carrots, homemade soup stock, chicken and egg noodles. Hits the spot!

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

If you're veg, eliminate the chicken and double up on the veggies, actually, you can double up on the veggies either way - it all depends how chunk you like your soup! Have this with some whole wheat crackers or toast and you've got yourself a meal.

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Kiwi, Lime & Avocado Smoothie Bowl

New Year, New You continues and I hope you're all still on track with healthy eating plans! I checked out the #barreGOALS board the last time I was in the studio to see what everyone was hoping for and decided to make some recipes based on the 2017 goals. First up was "Eat Greens Everyday!".

Well today's smoothie bowl is DEFINITELY green and you get both fruit and veg out of it, plus whatever healthy toppings you want to add. I made the recipe and was getting full halfway through eating it, so it's enough for two almost. 

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

There's nothing unhealthy about this recipe, but there can always be more good stuff added. Throw some coconut oil in there if you're feeling it, or blend some chia seeds right into the smoothie. Don't like kiwi? Try mango or more banana, or go with avocado slices if you're not feeling all the fruit. Just keep the greens as the base and you're golden

It's the start of the fitness challenge at Barre, so I'm starting you off with breakfast and delicious green (tea) matcha muffins. Super simple, no sugar, no dairy, no eggs, whole wheat? Yup. This recipe is a keeper.

I didn't add them in (I may have forgot) but you can totally add some fruit (blueberries or blackberries maybe) or some cacao nibs if you want a bit more of a kick!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Mushroom Crostini

Well 2016, is almost over, "FINALLY!" I'm sure some of you are saying. Between the drama of the year, and finally getting over the holiday festivities it's time to start fresh.

Speaking of fresh, I wanted to make sure everyone had a great, light and healthy appetizer to bring to their NYE parties or something you can make in the future for a dinner party year round.

The big bonus of this one, is that I used a lot of leftovers from the holiday meals, including a baguette that was starting to get a wee bit hard.

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

Multigrain or whole wheat baguette is great for this dish, esp as the slices are so thin. Also, you can find yourself some great vegan nut cheese for this one, or skip it all together and toast the baguette slices with a bit of olive oil. The mushroom mixture is savoury enough to stand on its own.

It's not always easy to eat your veggies, or get other people to eat them, esp. around the holidays where you know there is some great dessert coming up.

This recipe is insanely easy, quick, and really really tasty. On top of that, your kitchen is going to smell heavenly. You can make this for a meal for yourself, or as a side dish for a dinner - excellent for the holidays.

Happy Halloween! Well, almost! I wanted to find a healthy party snack that was tasty but spooky, and the internet delivered this idea! Make yourself some black bean hummus with it's own spider and web and it's sure to be a hit at your halloween party.

Throw some good stuff into the blender while you make this dip. Maybe some protein powder or hemp hearts!
