Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Banana Earl Grey Muffins

It looks like the weather is going to be slightly less dreary but I made these banana muffins one cold ,rainy afternoon and they're still delicious. Make them on a Sunday for brunch and if you make them in mini-form you can take them on the go on the way to Barre!

There isn't much more you can do to these as they are sugar free, made with oats and whole wheat flour, and are dairy-free as well! Maybe just eat them in moderation/share with friends, neighbours or your Barre BFF!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Cranberry & Apple Smoothie

It's the beginning of cranberry season!
I tend to stow them away in the freezer for dishes that require them and for smoothie making purposes, either with other berries, or straight up like this one. The sweeter the apple the less tart the smoothie, but I love tart things. You can also play with adding a bit more maple syrup, or a splash of lemon juice. It all depends how you like it. That's what taste tests are for!

You could probably hide some more goodness in this easily. Protein powder, hemp seeds... I want to add blue majik next time and see what colour it produces!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Blue Majik Smoothie Bowl

That was a nice little weekend of sunshine, but it looks like we're back to grey, so I decided to make a nice bright smoothie with some Blue Majik and dream of blue skies again!

If you're unfamiliar, Blue Majik is an extract of a blue-green algae Arthrospira platensis, and is full of nutrients - here's some more info on it! You can buy it online or in specialty stores like Body Energy Club.

Smoothie bowls are great because you can get a hit of fruit in the smoothie blend itself and in the toppings. Feel free to experiment with what you put in it based on what's in season, what you have frozen, and what your body needs!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Protein Pancakes with Lemon, Chia & Blueberries - #PancakeTuesday

Happy Pancake Tuesday!

I'd been looking into protein pancakes as a good pre-workout breakfast, and found a variety of recipes. I'm not into heavy pancakes (my dad used to call them "sinkers"), but the banana in these made them pretty light.

 

They don't require a lot of flour, so you could make them gluten free easily, and I'm sure you could sub in some flax eggs to make them vegan.

 

I like the lemon and blueberry combo (esp. with the banana), and I used plain protein powder, but feel free to try it with vanilla flavoured. Basically if you take the core ingredients you can sub in the different flavours with different fruits, but this combo is sweet enough naturally that you don't need to add sugar (and only need a little maple syrup)!

 

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

 

You could probably sneak more good stuff into the pancakes, depending on what you like...hemp hearts, more flax, other powders (like TruMarine Collagen powder).  And try cooking the blueberries right into the pancake on the skillet (or eat more on the side!).

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Broccoli Smoothie

Stay with me here...

I was having a discussion about the benefits of broccoli with someone that hates the taste of it, and began thinking: there's gotta be a way to put it in a smoothie and mask the taste.

 

It took a few tries, but I got to a point where it didn't taste like dirt! The thing is, if you're USED to green smoothies (kale, spinach etc) it's much easier to start with. If not, you will probably have to add more of the fruit (esp banana)!

 

NOTE: This recipe isn't an exact science! Test it, and add more of what you need to get it to a drinkable place for YOU!

 

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

There are so many things you can throw into a smoothie to add some good stuff into your diet (case in point: broccoli!), add some protein powder, or hemp hearts... I even put in WithinUS TruMarine Collagen to help my hair and nails, esp in the winter!

No, actually, it's my birthday today and this is pretty tasty!

You can add vanilla protein powder to the smoothie for some more goodness, but it will likely turn the smoothie green (I tried it, it did). But if you don't care about colour and just want a healthy vanilla smoothie, go for it! (You could use a scoop of flavourless too.)

I was making myself a green smoothie the other day, and ended up having a craving for an "Orange Julius". I can't tell you the last time I actually had one, but I do know that it is mostly sugar and could not be good for you, so here's my improvised version

Throw all the usual good stuff in here...chia seeds, hemp seeds, etc. It's a thick smoothie, so anything that is not drastic in flavour won't change the taste!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Rhubarb Banana Bread

Rhubarb is in season! I already made a coulis with some frozen raspberries from last season for a dessert, but I wanted to make something for breakfast...a healthy something! This banana bread is made with whole wheat, and has no added sugar! The small bits of rhubarb add a delicious pop during each bite, just make sure you cut them small enough so it's not super chunky!

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

If you use maple syrup instead of honey, and make some flax eggs instead of real eggs, you can make this a vegan loaf! And be sure to share the wealth and don't eat it all alone!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Kiwi, Lime & Avocado Smoothie Bowl

New Year, New You continues and I hope you're all still on track with healthy eating plans! I checked out the #barreGOALS board the last time I was in the studio to see what everyone was hoping for and decided to make some recipes based on the 2017 goals. First up was "Eat Greens Everyday!".

Well today's smoothie bowl is DEFINITELY green and you get both fruit and veg out of it, plus whatever healthy toppings you want to add. I made the recipe and was getting full halfway through eating it, so it's enough for two almost. 

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

There's nothing unhealthy about this recipe, but there can always be more good stuff added. Throw some coconut oil in there if you're feeling it, or blend some chia seeds right into the smoothie. Don't like kiwi? Try mango or more banana, or go with avocado slices if you're not feeling all the fruit. Just keep the greens as the base and you're golden

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Persimmon Smoothie

What even IS a persimmon? This is what I asked myself, as I was placing the two different kinds into my basket (they were on sale and I'm adventurous for this blog okay?).

Turns out, yes, they are a fruit, and there are two main kinds (pictured below). One, the smaller of the two, you can eat like a peach, pealed, or bite right in. The other one (bigger in size) needs to sit and ripen or else it apparently tastes way too astringent. This second kind is the one that I used for the smoothie, after I let them sit on the window sill for several days until they were very squishy. (Here are some tips.)

I decided to go with a smoothie, because blending felt the safest route for a fruit I've never had before.

I looked at at few recipes and decided on some other ingredients, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. Somewhere between a pumpkin smoothie and an orange julius.

There are always so many things you can add into smoothies that blend in without being detected. Hemp seeds, coconut oil, protein mix. The world is your oyster, just keep it balanced and nutritious!
