Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Sardines on Avocado Multigrain Toasts

 

 

It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!


I know what you're thinking...'anchovies?!', but hear me out! This is a delicious meal that can be used as either a lunch, appy, or even breakfast, and it's super healthy. The marinade is homemade and you can either use the sardines whole, or break them up like I did. (It kind of resembles tuna!)

 

Make it Even Healthier Tip: 
Sardines are still a sustainable source of seafood (yay!), and healthy too. Feel free to substitute the bread for a gluten-free version. Note: You can get sardines in water, instead of oil, like I did, but either way, be sure to get the ones that aren't already seasoned.

I inhaled these! I saw something similar a while ago and had some cauliflower in my fridge and decided to try my hand at them. Great to bring to those Christmas parties that seem to be every day now!

 

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

 

Not sure if you can make these with a flax egg to make it vegan, but it will likely work - use vegan mayo instead of greek yogurt too.

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Pea & Mint Soup

Peas are in season (in my own garden too! If you have some space they're really easy to grow) and mint grows like a weed (literally), so I thought it was appropriate to make a chilled Pea and Mint Soup. This is great as a first course, lunch, or you can get fancy and put it in shot glasses at a party like gazpacho!

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

This soup is very straight forward and all veggies, but try and use your own, homemade soup stock to reduce the added salt, and pick as much up from the farmer's markets as possible!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Mushroom Crostini

Well 2016, is almost over, "FINALLY!" I'm sure some of you are saying. Between the drama of the year, and finally getting over the holiday festivities it's time to start fresh.

Speaking of fresh, I wanted to make sure everyone had a great, light and healthy appetizer to bring to their NYE parties or something you can make in the future for a dinner party year round.

The big bonus of this one, is that I used a lot of leftovers from the holiday meals, including a baguette that was starting to get a wee bit hard.

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

Multigrain or whole wheat baguette is great for this dish, esp as the slices are so thin. Also, you can find yourself some great vegan nut cheese for this one, or skip it all together and toast the baguette slices with a bit of olive oil. The mushroom mixture is savoury enough to stand on its own.

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Crab Rangoons


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

I've been craving a version of these rangoons for a while now...something we used to get from the frozen section when I was younger. I decided to start looking up healthier versions of it and then come up with some modifications of my own. Crab is a sustainable seafood, whose season runs all year long - which makes it a great pick (be sure to get the real thing, not imitation crab - or start right from the source and pick up a live crab down at the fisherman's wharf!).

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

Baking these rangoons instead of deep frying them saves a TON on the calorie count, and substituting the vegan cream cheese for the full or low-fat cream cheese eliminates the dairy as well. The BEST idea is to share them. Make them a fancy appetizer at your next get together, because they're so good you'll eat a whole batch on your own.
