Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Mushroom Crostini


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

Well 2016, is almost over, "FINALLY!" I'm sure some of you are saying. Between the drama of the year, and finally getting over the holiday festivities it's time to start fresh.

Speaking of fresh, I wanted to make sure everyone had a great, light and healthy appetizer to bring to their NYE parties or something you can make in the future for a dinner party year round.

The big bonus of this one, is that I used a lot of leftovers from the holiday meals, including a baguette that was starting to get a wee bit hard.

Have a safe and happy NYE, and we'll see you in 2017 for the New Year, New You Challenge!

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

Multigrain or whole wheat baguette is great for this dish, esp as the slices are so thin. Also, you can find yourself some great vegan nut cheese for this one, or skip it all together and toast the baguette slices with a bit of olive oil. The mushroom mixture is savoury enough to stand on its own.

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Roasted Brussels Sprouts & Cauliflower with Truffle Oil

It's not always easy to eat your veggies, or get other people to eat them, esp. around the holidays where you know there is some great dessert coming up.

This recipe is insanely easy, quick, and really really tasty. On top of that, your kitchen is going to smell heavenly. You can make this for a meal for yourself, or as a side dish for a dinner - excellent for the holidays.

You can likely pick up all of these items at your local farmers market, but if not, go organic and aim for local!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe - Homemade Sparkling Drinks (with the Bonne O System)


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

I really wanted to multi-task this week and come up with a party-season-is-upon-us type drink, but keep it healthy, and think of something that could also be a holiday gift...enter the Bonne O Sparkling Water System!

This is a Canadian owned/based company (Toronto), and you can get the machines at stores all over town. The system uses this carbonation disk instead of a CO2 tank, and you can infuse all kinds of fruits (and veg) directly into the water.

For todays recipes, I've made a great sparkling green tea, a turmeric lemonade for post-workout re-fueling, and a sugar-free cocktail that you can use for parties, or go alcohol free and its just as tasty!

If your goal for the new year is to drink less sugary beverages, this is an awesome idea, and can also help get your fruit intake up!

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

Avoid the sugar whenever possible. Bonne O has its own syrup infusions, but you can make your own at home, and either cut the sugar down, or eliminate it, or only use half of the recommendations!

Tasty Tuesday: Recipe Ideas with Blue Heron Creamery's Nut Cheeses!


It's "Tasty Tuesday", where every week we bring you new, fresh, local, healthy recipes and food tips. Find out what is in season, and what will keep you fuelled during and after your work outs!

This week we're bringing some recipe ideas to you, all made with Blue Heron Creamery's nut cheeses! Chef Karen McAthy is a wizard when it comes to creating really tasty cheese out of nuts, and if you're dairy free, vegan or just love nut cheese, you can sign yourself up to the monthly cheese subscriptions.

Make Your Meal Even Healthier Tip:

If you're working with pasta or bread, go for the whole grains instead of just white. Making a cheese board? Add some fruit! Nachos? Use black beans!

The cheese board above features: Ashed Cashew Camembert, Hot Pepper Gouda, Apricot Wenslydale, and Fig and Saffron Kefir Cheese! Below is a close up of the Camenbert (my fav of the bunch), and it all paired really well with fruit, and also, look how pretty! Definitely great for a holiday party!
